Students receive scholarships
06/10
The McPherson County Community Foundation recently announced the 2010 scholarship recipients from local funds. Each recipient completed an application and was reviewed by the selection committees.
Waldhauer Memorial Scholarship
Sam Clark and Kristi Bretches each received a $1,000 scholarship.
Sam, son of Chad and Debbie Clark, will be attending the University of Kansas. Sam was involved in football; Catholic Youth Organization; volunteer for community dinners and Meals on Wheels; and a member of Friends of Rachel, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, KAY’s, International Club.
Kristi, daughter of Larry Bretches, will be attending either Emporia State University or Kansas State University. Kristi was involved in the National Honor Society; Fellowship of Christian Athletes; and FCCLA. She served as a volunteer for Vacation Bible School and Loaves and Fishes.
Students attending McPherson High School and planning to attend a trade school or university are eligible for a scholarship. Grants from the fund are made possible by the annual Waldhauer Golf Tournament hosted in memory of Lisa Waldhauer a former American Government and History II teacher at McPherson High School.
Kyle McMannis Scholarship
Brooke Burgan and Kristine Larson were each selected to receive a $400 scholarship from the Kyle Jefferson McMannis Scholarship Fund.
Brooke is a graduate of St. John High School and is planning to attend the American Academy of Cosmetology. She was active in Volleyball; Basketball; Cheerleading; Band; a member of Pep Club, Student Council; Kayettes; National Honor Society; and served as a volunteer for the Stucco Food Drive and Secret Santa Volunteer Concert.
Kristine is a graduate of Canton/Galva High School and is planning to attend Kansas State University. Kristine was active in Volleyball; Softball; Cheerleading; a member of Future Business Leaders of American; Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America; National Honors Society; Student Council; and served as editor and co-editor of the school paper.
The McMannis fund was established in memory of Kyle by his family. Students attending Canton/Galva High School or St. John’s High School are eligible to apply for the scholarship.
Raleigh Insurance Scholarship
Taylor Ediger was selected to receive a $500 scholarship. Taylor graduated from Inman High School and will be attending Kansas State University. Taylor was active in Basketball; Track; Football; a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes; served as president for the National Honor Society; a member of Future Farmers of America; STUCO; and a youth representative for Bethel Mennonite Youth Group.
The fund was established by the Raleigh Insurance Company, Inman, Kansas for Inman High School students planning to pursue a degree in an agriculture or business related field.
