16 Apr Foundation Completes Tax Assistance Program
The McPherson County Community Foundation has concluded its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program for 2026.
Launched at the foundation in 2025, the program provides free tax preparation for individuals and families who meet income guidelines. Returns are prepared and filed by trained volunteers who complete IRS certification and testing each year. Participants only need to provide the required documents; no prior knowledge of the tax system is necessary.
During the two-month program, the foundation helped complete more than 130 tax returns, up from 87 the previous year. Much of the growth came from the program’s new drop-off option, which made it easier to match volunteer availability with submitted returns.
Participants consistently share how valuable the program is, noting that it saves them the cost of professional tax preparation. The service has been especially helpful for people who lack the technology or skills to file on their own, including retirees and individuals with disabilities.
“We have seen the impact the VITA program can have in our communities.” Michelle Huddle, MCCF CEO said, “We are incredibly grateful to the volunteers that gave their time and effort to make this year’s program a possibility.”
