23 Apr Foundation Files: Youth Advisory Council Established
In 2003, the foundation launched its first youth grantmaking initiative with the McPherson County Youth Advisory Council (YAC). The program brought together students ages 13–18 from across McPherson County and gave them the opportunity to review grant applications and award funding to projects that supported their communities.
The first council included eight middle and high school students. Members were active in a variety of community programs and either applied or were nominated through the foundation’s selection process.
To establish the program, the YAC received $21,000 from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation and training from the Coalition of Community Foundations for Youth. Council members also participated in training through the Kansas Youth Philanthropy Initiative at their first official meeting.
During its first grant cycle, the YAC allocated $7,000 to programs that benefited local youth. Three grants were awarded:• $1,500 to
Youth 2 Youth
• $2,742 to Lindsborg Children’s Center
• $2,758 to McPherson Health Care Foundation
YAC members also took part in volunteer activities such as fundraisers, community cleanups, and foundation matching events.
Today, the foundation’s youth philanthropy work continues through Voices In Philanthropy (VIPs). The program focuses on engaging elementary school students across the county. By involving entire grade levels, VIPs has expanded participation and created new opportunities for students to make a positive impact in their communities.
