In 2009, the McPherson County Community Foundation and United Way of McPherson County partnered to provide nutritional food to children in McPherson during the summer months. Low-income, food insecure children rely on school breakfasts and lunches throughout the school year, but have no such support through the summer months. Most have limited supplies of food for the summer. The program provides kid-friendly food such as cereal, sandwich supplies, healthy snacks and single-serve fruit cups and pudding.
Between the 2009 and 2011 summers nearly 500 children have benefitted from the program. It is anticipated there will be at least 210 children served during the 2012 summer. In the past the program has been funded by generous donations from people like you and grants from private foundations. Based on expenses from previous years and taking into account the rising food costs, we anticipate spending $90.09 per child throughout the 11-week summer which brings our total just over $18,000 for the summer. Currently, we have $5,000 available for the program and donations are needed.
