Summer Lunch Program

The Lisa Waldhauer Memorial Fund committee is offering a $.50 per dollar donated up to $2500 to support the 2014 Summer Lunch Program. The program will run from June 4 through July 30. To register for the program, families may contact the United Way at 620.241.5152 or the Foundation at 620.245.9070. The program is a collaborative effort by the McPherson County Community Foundation and the United Way of McPherson County.

Low-income, food insecure children rely on school breakfasts and lunches throughout the school year, but have no such support through the summer months. Most have limited supplies of food for the summer. The Summer Lunch Program provides kid-friendly food such as cereal, sandwich supplies, healthy snacks and single-serve fruit cups and pudding. Grocery bags containing a certain amount of food based on the number of children in the family are delivered weekly. For those children with allergies or special dietary needs, a separate bag with appropriate snacks is prepared.

During the 2013 summer, 227 children received weekly deliveries of nutritional snacks and food bringing the five year total to 886 children who have benefitted from the program. The summer lunch program is funded by generous donors and grants from private foundations. Based on expenses from previous years, we anticipate spending $68.76 per child throughout the 9-week summer which brings our total just over $15,000 for the summer.

Donors are encouraged to send gifts marked “Summer Lunch Program – Waldhauer Challenge” to the McPherson County Community Foundation at 206 S. Main, McPherson or the United Way of McPherson County, PO Box 55, McPherson.
