15 May Afterschool Program Meets Critical Need in Inman
One theme echoed throughout the 2024 Mastermind McPherson County surveys: the need for accessible childcare. In nearly every community, it ranked among the top five priorities. In Inman, it was No. 2.
And the issue isn’t limited to infant care. Many schools dismiss students well before parents finish work, leaving many families with young children on their own for care.
That’s where the Inman Wellness Center stepped in.
Self-described as “small but mighty,” the center aimed to launch an afterschool program for kindergarten through sixth grade students. According to its grant proposal, roughly 5% of local children ages 0–12 lack access to any form of childcare.
The need was clear. The staff was ready. What was missing? Funding.
Enter the McPherson County Community Foundation (MCCF) and the Mastermind McPherson County initiative. A $5,000 matching grant helped bring the project to life.
“While we may be small, we are certainly mighty!” said Staci Eddy, director of the Inman Wellness Center and the Inman Recreation Commission. “Watching this group grow closer has been nothing short of amazing. These children have bonded over simple joys, reminding us of the magic in slowing down and just being present.”
The program offers a safe, supportive environment for kids to unwind after a full school day. While there are structured games and planned activities, staff often encourage free play to help students build social connections.
“It’s not just about the games or the adventures, it’s about connection,” Eddy said. “Whether they’re coloring side-by-side, sharing a snack or chatting with a mentor over cards, this program gives them the space to relax, make choices and just be kids.”
From crafting puppets to board games and art projects, the children’s creativity shines.
The program also meets a practical need for parents. It runs through 6 p.m., making it easier for working families who commute back to Inman to pick up their children. It’s also a great outlet for kids with energy to spare.
“As a parent, it can be so hard to slow down in the hustle of daily life,” Eddy said. “Here, that’s exactly what we do: slow down, sit and play. And the kids love every minute of it!”
Eddy believes this is just the beginning. The grant enabled the center to offer competitive pay for staff and cover day-to-day expenses. Attendance is expected to double from 2024 to 2025, and the program is planning for growth.
“We’re excited to grow, but no matter how big we get, the heart of our program will always stay the same,” Eddy said. “Creating a space where kids can be themselves, explore their imaginations and build lasting friendships.”
