30 Apr Supply Closet prepares for growing need
A few weeks ago, we shared how a grant helped provide computer carts for McPherson Middle School. Since then, the carts have helped support a new schoolwide policy that limits student access to personal school computers. That change is already shaping another need: school supplies.
Principal Inge Esping said the school expects supply needs to increase as students rely less on electronics. Staff are currently revising the school supply list to better reflect what students will need for the coming year. At present, families are asked to purchase more than $80 in supplies per student.
With more than 40% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, the school recognizes that additional supply costs could place a burden on many families. To help address this, McPherson Middle School established an endowment in 2025 to support its Supply Closet program.
The Supply Closet began in 2021 and provides essential materials to students in need. Through donations from local partners and businesses, the school typically distributes $1,000 to $2,000 in supplies each year. If classroom supply needs continue to rise, demand on the program will likely grow as well.
Currently, the closet supports between 100 and 150 students each year. Esping said the number of students seeking help has not significantly increased, but the school is using its existing stock more quickly. Items such as paper and other frequently used supplies are already running low.
The shift away from electronics has also brought positive changes. Esping said student engagement has noticeably improved.
“I think students would say their engagement is better,” she said. “We’re hearing that they feel more focused.”
Disciplinary issues related to device use have also dropped. Previously, the school’s monitoring system flagged concerning or non-academic behavior. Since the change, Esping reports there have been zero GoGuardian alerts requiring immediate action.
To ensure long-term support, the school is working toward a $40,000 endowment to sustain annual supply distributions. The Supply Closet is also developing a list of most-needed items for individuals, groups, and organizations interested in donating.
