Estate and Legacy Giving

A legacy gift is often the most meaningful gift a donor will make. It reflects thoughtful planning and a lasting commitment to the causes and communities they care about most. Whether given during a donor’s lifetime or through an estate plan, these gifts provide financial support to nonprofits at the time and in the way the donor chooses.

Some donors choose to give immediately through cash or gifts of marketable securities, allowing them to see the impact of their generosity firsthand. Others choose future gifts through a will, trust, or beneficiary designation. Some create plans that provide income during their lifetime while also ensuring future support for the organizations they value. A final will is more than a legal document. It is an opportunity to leave a lasting impact on the community and causes that matter most.

A Gift to Home: The Bartels Story

Robert and Rosetta Bartels called the community of Inman their home. Robert was a local banker, and Rosetta was a dedicated community volunteer. Throughout their lives, they gave their time and resources to many local organizations, including the Inman Library and Museum. Through their estate plans, the Bartels left a portion of their estate to support the endowments of those organizations, helping preserve their future while creating a lasting legacy for their family and community.

A Pledge to you Community’s Future

A bequest, made through a will or living trust, is a popular, flexible way to support your charitable interests through the McPherson County Community Foundation. A bequest to create an endowment or add to an existing fund can be done by designating a specific amount, a percentage of your estate, or what remains after all other bequests are fulfilled. Benefits can include significant state tax savings. (Please see our Sample Bequest Language.)

To maximize flexibility, the McPherson County Community Foundation accepts Letter of Intent during your lifetime. This strategy allows for changes to be made in relation to your charitable goals, marital status and more at any point in your lifetime at no charge.
