MCCF Opens Appointments for Free Tax Assistance Program

MCCF Opens Appointments for Free Tax Assistance Program

The McPherson County Community Foundation is accepting appointments for its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. The first round of appointments will be available in Feb.

The VITA program, operated by the Internal Revenue Service for more than 50 years, provides free tax preparation assistance to eligible individuals. All volunteer tax preparers are locally sourced.

Individuals qualify for the program if they meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • Earn $67,000 or less annually
  • Have a disability
  • Are limited English-speaking taxpayers

VITA services are available for current-year 2025 tax returns only.

Appointments are one hour long, with two volunteers reviewing each return. Space is limited, and appointments must be scheduled in advance.

New this year, the Foundation will also offer a drop-off option. Participants may leave their tax documents with a reviewer to be processed. Once returns are finished, individuals will be notified when they can pick up their completed tax documents. Identification, including a Social Security card and photo ID, is required at both drop-off and pickup. All tax documents, such as W-2s and 1099s, must be provided at drop-off. Drop offs will be accepted on Tuesdays through Thursdays.

Items needed for an appointment include:

  • Tax documents, such as Forms W-2, 1099, 1098 and 1095
  • Social Security cards or ITIN letters for all individuals listed on the return
  • A photo ID, such as a valid driver’s license, for the taxpayer and spouse
  • A copy of previous year’s tax return
